Based on OSRM routing (demo server, car profile) (Project OSRM, using OpenStreetMap data, live routing on current OpenStreetMap data) and 2 other sources. Checked .
Routes is one of the five sections of Sheffield's knowledge test. You get 10 questions and need at least 80% (8 out of 10). Each question asks for the shortest route between two places of interest, starting and finishing as close to each place as you can.
Our right answers are the routes a routing engine (OSRM, car profile) gave on today's OpenStreetMap road map, listed by their main roads. The wrong answers are real routes too, but longer. The road map does not model Sheffield's bus gates and tram gates, which the Council lets you use in this section, so on the real test a route through a gate may be shorter. Roadworks and new one-way streets can also change the best route. Check the Council's bus lanes and gates page and a current map.

Questions people ask
How did you decide which route is shortest?
We ran each trip through the OSRM routing engine with the car profile and listed the main roads it used. For the wrong options we forced the route through other roads and kept only those that came out clearly longer.
Why might the real answer be different?
The Council lets you use bus lanes, bus gates and tram gates in this section, and a normal road map does not. A route through a gate can be shorter than any of ours. The Council also expects you to know about current roadworks.
Will the real test use these routes?
The Council gives three examples: Botanical Gardens to Meadowhall, Kelham Island Museum to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, and Heeley City Farm to Hillsborough Leisure Centre. We include those. It does not publish the others.
