About this site
Taxi Knowledge Test is a free, independent practice site for people applying for a hackney carriage or private hire driver licence in the UK. It is not run by any council, and passing a practice test here doesn't count towards a licence.
How the questions are written
Councils keep their real question banks private, so every question here is written fresh. Each one is based on a document a council or the government publishes: the council's licensing policy and licence conditions, its byelaws, the Equality Act 2010, the Highway Code, or the DfT's Statutory Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Standards. The answer explanation names the rule it comes from.
Questions about places and routes are checked against OpenStreetMap. Route questions use a road routing service, which doesn't know about every bus gate or temporary closure, so learn the official rules for your council too.
Why every page has a date
Councils change their tests, fees and policies often, many of them every April. Each page says which documents it is based on, when they were published and when we last checked them. Where a council doesn't publish something, such as a pass mark, we say so rather than guess.
Mistakes and changes
If something here doesn't match your council's current guidance, the council is right. Please email contact@taxiknowledgetest.co.uk with the page and what has changed, and we'll fix it.
How the site is paid for
The site is free to use. It may show adverts from Google AdSense; see privacy and cookies for what that means.
