Nottingham shortest routes: questions and answers

Based on OSRM routing (demo server, car profile) (Project OSRM, using OpenStreetMap data, live routing on current OpenStreetMap data) and one other source. Checked .

The last section of Nottingham's Topography Test is shortest route. The Council does not publish the routes it asks about, so we chose trips between places passengers often ask for.

Each right answer is the route a routing engine (OSRM, car profile) gave on today's road map, listed by its main roads. Each wrong answer is a real route too, but longer. One-way streets and road changes can alter the best route, so always check a current map.

Questions people ask

How did you decide which route is shortest?

We ran each trip through the OSRM routing engine with the car profile and listed the main roads it used. For the wrong options we forced the route through other roads and kept only those that came out longer.

Will the real test use these routes?

We do not know which routes the Council uses. Use these to practise thinking about main roads, then study a map of the whole city.
