Section 1 of Manchester's knowledge test has a locations part, and you need 8 correct answers to pass it. The Council does not publish which places it uses, so these questions cover places that passengers often ask for: venues, civic buildings, hospitals, hotels and sports grounds.

Every answer was checked on OpenStreetMap. These are our own practice questions, not the Council's. The real test also has an A-Z map-reading part, which we cannot copy online.

Questions people ask

Are these the places in the real Manchester test?

We do not know. The Council has not published a list of places that we could find. Learn the main places across the city, not only these.

I am applying for private hire. Does my area matter?

Yes. The Council's Stage 3 page (archived April 2026) says private hire applicants choose Area 1 (North), Area 2 (Central) or Area 3 (South). It does not say which places each area covers, so ask the Council.
