Bristol policy and legislation: questions and answers

Based on Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy 2021-2026 (includes licence conditions) (Bristol City Council, published 27 July 2021) and one other source. Checked .

Policy and legislation is one of the sections of Bristol's knowledge test for both hackney carriage and private hire drivers. The Council's example question in this section is about where you may and may not park.

These questions are based on the Council's Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy 2021-2026, which holds the vehicle policies, the fit and proper person policy, the guidelines on convictions and the licence conditions. The policy prints conditions in full for private hire drivers and for hackney carriage vehicles; those questions are marked with the licence type.

The national law behind the policy, such as plying for hire and the Equality Act duties, is covered in our core topics. Learn the Bristol numbers here: next working day for reporting, 20 metres from a rank, three working days to return badges and 14 days to update a meter.

Questions people ask

Is the policy still current?

The Council's policy page says the 2021-2026 policy came into force on 27 July 2021 and is still the one it links to. The Council says it aims to review it at least every five years, so check the licence and policy page for a newer version.

Are there hackney carriage driver conditions in the policy?

The policy prints conditions for private hire drivers, private hire vehicles, operators and hackney carriage vehicles. It does not print separate hackney carriage driver conditions, so hackney drivers should also read the Acts and the Council's byelaws.
