How to book the Wolverhampton taxi test

Updated .

You do not book the Wolverhampton taxi test with City of Wolverhampton Council. Worcestershire County Council runs the course and test, and you book with them.

This site is not the council and not Worcestershire County Council. We cannot book a place for you. To book, use the Worcestershire County Council booking site or the contacts below.

Who books where

Worcestershire's Driver Training team says it cannot book private hire places or change private hire dates for you. Private hire bookings are online only.

The fee and resits

The course and test cost £50, and you pay this on each attempt. You must pass within 3 attempts.

Your second attempt can be a test-only resit for £20. You cannot choose the test-only option for your first or third attempt. If you fail all three attempts, you must wait 12 months before you can start again.

Hackney carriage applicants also take a Part 2 practical driving assessment for £80, in their own vehicle from the council's approved list.

Worcestershire gives a full refund only if you cancel at least 48 hours before the course. You cancel through your booking confirmation email.

On the day

The course lasts about 6 hours. After the training you sit a written multiple-choice test of 28 questions. You need 75% to pass, and 8 of the questions are key questions on safeguarding, plying for hire and disability awareness.

Everything is in English. There is a face-to-face English assessment, followed by a recorded interview if there are concerns. No translation or interpreters are allowed. Worcestershire says you will not be able to sit the test until they believe your English meets the standard, and there is no refund once you have attended.

Arrive on time. If you are late you will not be let in, and you will have to pay again for another date.

  • Bring your original photocard DVLA driving licence
  • Bring proof of your National Insurance number
  • Bring a copy of your booking email (printed or on your phone)

After you pass

Your private hire application is only processed after you have passed the course. If you applied for your private hire licence before doing the training, email driver.lic@wolverhampton.gov.uk when you pass.

You must apply for your licence within 12 months of passing. For badge, DBS or medical questions, Worcestershire's page gives the council's licensing number, 01902 551155.

Get ready first

Practise the three key areas before your course: safeguarding, plying for hire and disability awareness. Then try the full Wolverhampton mock test.
